Who Are These Firms?

  • Gateways provide their clients with an automated electronic access to 1) multiple proprietary database vendors or 2) government agency online systems. Gateways are similar to distributors except gateways do not warehouse records – they merely provide a sophisticated method to electronically access existing databases.

  • Distributors are automated public record dealers who combine public sources of bulk data and/or online access to develop their own in-house database products. Also known as Primary Distributors, they collect or buy public record information from government repositories and reformat that information in useful ways. They may also purchase and hold records from other information vendors, like phone companies. There are hundreds of these vendors in the U.S. that collect, warehouse, and sell public record information.

  • Search firms are companies who furnish clients with public record search and document retrieval services using online services and/or through a network of on-site specialists, including their own employees or correspondents (see Record Retrievers). Search firms may rely on other vendors such as distributors, gateways and/or networks of retrievers, or they may go direct to the government agency.
